Engineering his own future

When COVID disrupted his plans to train as an electrician, Musthaq Badurdeen found himself rethinking his future. After working in Amazon deliveries and searching for a more stable, long-term career path, he joined Pacifica in 2021 as an engineer.

Pacifica Local Coventry

Fast-forward to January 2024 and Musthaq took the leap into business ownership, launching his Pacifica Local franchise in Coventry. What started as a fresh opportunity has quickly become, in his words, “one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.”

Now on an upward trajectory, Musthaq is focused on growing his brand locally, expanding his team, and building an established business in the area he serves.

Starting from zero

Musthaq’s entry into appliance repair wasn’t built on previous experience – it was built on a willingness to succeed.

“When I joined Pacifica, I didn’t have an appliance repair background. Initially, my focus was simply on becoming an engineer. Business ownership wasn’t part of the plan, but when I was told about the Pacifica Local franchise opportunity, it piqued my interest.”

Like many new owners, Musthaq was a little sceptical at first. “Going from employee to entrepreneur is a big step – one that I hadn’t taken before. Early on, I could see the growth opportunity and my mindset quickly shifted from it being a job to something I felt I could really build.”

Learning the craft

The turning point was training. “The technical training was very practical. They went further than showing us how to do a task; they made sure we fully understood each repair before moving on to the next stage.”

That depth of learning built confidence fast. “We were always encouraged to ask questions. It was a really open environment.”

Now, having trained another engineer himself – someone who also came from a non-practical background – Musthaq sees the role differently. “I think at first I was a little apprehensive as I didn’t have an engineering or entrepreneurial background but being a franchise partner at Pacifica Local is something you can learn.

“If you’ve got the right mindset and you’re willing to put in the work, you can do it.”

Plugged into support

Stepping into business ownership for the first time made support invaluable to Musthaq. “The ongoing support truly is world class. The in-field support is there to help you develop your skills, the business assistance is thorough and gives you the resources to help you establish yourself quickly, and there’s a friendly and communicative network – it means you feel like you’re not going it alone.”

With the initial scepticism eliminated, Musthaq now knew he was stepping into something that was designed for sustainable success.

Workflow and growth

Consistency of work gave Musthaq stability from day one. “When I started as an engineer, I got work straight away – and that didn’t change after I became a franchise partner. The jobs I got, particularly the ones supplied by head office, really helped me establish myself.”

Alongside that work, Musthaq wanted to increase traction through his own channels. “I’m building my own customer base through Checkatrade, Google, and enquiries on my website.”

He’s seeing steady growth across Coventry – something he views as a sign that the foundations are working.

Life as a business owner

While operating as a sole trader in his territory, Musthaq doesn’t view Pacifica Local Coventry as just self-employment. Part of that comes from the day-to-day variety. “This isn’t a job, this is business ownership. I love meeting new people and tackling different challenges every day.”

The biggest shift for Musthaq has been control – over his time, income, and future. But that autonomy also brings accountability. “Your income is linked to the effort you put in. You can earn as much as you’re willing to work for – having self-motivation is a key part of being a franchise partner.”

Building for the future

With his business now firmly established, Musthaq’s focus is on growth. “My long-term plan is to hire and train new engineers to work under me. That means we can start to scale our operations and serve even more homeowners in and around Coventry.”

Alongside growing Pacifica Local Coventry, Musthaq hopes to complete his electrician qualification – a personal goal rather than a requirement for a franchise partner. “It’s something I want to do for myself. It’s always been an interest of mine and I see it as a way to keep developing professionally.”

The Pacifica Local difference

For Musthaq, what stands out most is the balance of independence and support. “The consistent job flow makes a big difference, but it’s also the wider structure around you – there’s strong support, both operational and entrepreneurial, and a clear path for growth.

“You’re not on your own, you’re part of something structured, collaborative, and designed to aid your success.”
Advice for new franchise partners

His advice to anyone considering the path is simple.

“You don’t have to have prior experience because both the appliance repair and business ownership aspects are learnable – the key is your mindset. Ask questions, use the training and resources available to you, and be prepared to work hard. If you put your mind to it, there’s genuine potential for growth.”
